Tony Whincup is Associate Professor at Massey University, and head of the School of Visual & Material Culture in the College of Creative Arts at the Wellington campus.
Tony has 30+ years’ experience photographing and writing about Kiribati. His publications include: Nareau’s Nation – A Portrait of the Gilbert Islands, Kiribati, and Akekeia! Traditional Dance in Kiribati, which won the Montana Book Award in 2002.
His most recent work has focused upon the potential effects of climate change on the country’s traditional knowledge systems.
In 2008 Tony was awarded the Boutakan Toronibwain Kiribati (BTK — Kiribati Order of Merit) for his services to the country.
