About the Book
Bill Kemp relates tales of the day-to-day bravery of
common folk who live at the mercy of the weather; of
comradeship; hijinks and disaster. Find out how it feels
to be in the centre of a hundred-year storm, how
adaptable you need to be when everyday life is
dictated by the vagaries of the weather, and how
solitude breeds creativity.

About the Author

Bill Kemp was born in Stoke, Nelson in 1926. As a
young man he followed a family tradition and went to
sea in merchant vessels. After the 1951 waterfront
strike he became assistant keeper at Puysegur Point,
Fiordland: the start of 26 years' service as a keeper
and lighthouse inspector in New Zealand and Australia.
Bill is now retired, and lives in Wellington.
